Our lives have considerably shifted over the last few years. Most of our daily interactions, such as shopping and even work tasks, happen online. Although the convenience is great, we now, more than ever, require internet security. But what exactly is internet security? How can you protect yourself from potential online risks? Let’s find out!

What is Internet Security?
Internet security means preventing online data from being stolen, damaged, or misused. It includes protecting gadgets, private information, and online accounts against dangers such as viruses, hackers, and identity theft. You run the risk of jeopardising your financial security or privacy each time you log in, shop, or even just browse. However, internet security combines software, best practices, and awareness to prevent these risks from becoming real problems.

Businesses and institutions aren’t safe from online risks, either. If your business becomes a target, it could affect thousands, if not millions, of people affiliated with your company by compromising financial and consumer data.

Common Internet Security Threats
Before you understand how to protect yourself, it’s helpful to know what security threats are out there. Here are a few common ones:

1. Malware: Short for “malicious software,” malware includes viruses, worms, and spyware. These programs can infect your device, damage files, and track your online activities.

2. Phishing Attacks: These attacks act as reliable sources, such as a bank or a well-known website, to fool users into divulging private information.

3. Identity Theft: When someone steals your personal information, like your National Insurance Number or credit card details, to commit fraud, it’s known as identity theft. This can have serious financial consequences.

4. Ransomware: Ransomware is a type of software that locks your data or device and demands money to unlock it. Businesses are frequently the target of these attacks, but people can be, too.

How to Protect Yourself Online
Thankfully, protecting yourself online doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some practical steps you can take to boost your internet security:

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Don't use the same password for several accounts. Use letters, numbers, and symbols to make complex ones.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Many online services offer 2FA, which provides extra security by requiring a second form of identification to get into your accounts. This could be a biometric scan or a text message code, which makes it difficult for hackers to gain access.
3. Be Cautious with Links and Attachments: Phishing attacks often come through emails and dodgy links. If you receive an email that looks dubious or are unsure of a link, don't click on it. Verify the source first.
4. Install Security Software: Up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware software are essential for online security. Before online threats cause any damage, this software identifies and eliminates them.
5. Stay Informed and Aware: Awareness is half the battle. By keeping up with basic internet security practices and recognising potential risks, you can protect yourself better. Be cautious with public Wi-Fi and avoid sharing personal details unless absolutely necessary.

The Bottom Line
Although it may appear technical, internet security is all about being cautious and mindful. You can be online without needlessly endangering yourself if you take the appropriate safety measures. Remember, even tiny actions can have a big impact.
