Just over a year ago we did an Interview with… Saint Francis Hospice. One of their Fundraisers, Andy Furneaux, was kind enough to tell us about the amazing work the hospice does for thousands of people, year in, year out. St Francis Hospice is well-known across Havering, beaming its brightly coloured orange and messages of hope, care and love in the community. Our health can be compromised at any time of life and the caring professionals of this hospice regularly look after people of all ages; whether that’s at some point of their illness or at their end of life. Recently, we were invited by Andy to see where so much wonderful work takes place. We were given a full tour of the buildings and told how, almost 40 years prior, the birth of this caregiving sanctuary was born. Its inception began when a group of local professionals saw the need for the provision of end-of-life care. It was a result of their dedication that they were able to raise enough funds to buy the original building, known as, ‘The Hall’ in the late 70’s. Originally, The Hall housed patients but it now serves as offices for human resources, clinical staff and team meetings. A purpose built in-patient unit was later added and this is where the clinical care takes place. This area is also home to a chapel, wall of remembrance and other activities where people can gather and talk about their experiences. Other therapies and support services on offer are: • Physiotherapy • Occupational therapy • Complementary therapy • Counselling and psychological support • Social support • Pastoral care • Orangeline • Tea and talk • Bereavement counselling • Child and family therapy • Bereavement support group • Friendly faces • Walk on group Throughout the tour, we were struck by the warmth and homely feel of the environment and from those working for Saint Francis. Their care goes above and beyond. It's evident that each person is treated with dignity and love.
